http://ndinndun.wordpress.com/2009/05/

The fresh smell air in the dawn, shine of sun, surrounded by volcanoes, smile of peoples along the way, hundreds heritage building, and variety color of shopping. pleasure. expererience. dreams. here in Bandung, Indonesia.

Bandung is provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. Located at main island of Indonesia, the Java Island on a highland plateau 768 meters above sea level, at 6°55' S 107°36' E.

Bandung is surrounded by mountains and located in the middle of prehistoric lake.

how to reach Bandung

As one of big city in Indonesia, Bandung can be reach from many other cities in Indonesia, even from another island such as Sumatra, Bali, and Borneo (Kalimantan). From Asia, Bandung can be reach directly from Malaysia and Singapore. see getting here

earlier Bandung

Beginning from "De Grote Postweg", The capital city of Bandung Regency were move from Dayeuh Kolot to Cikapundung riverside (near alun-alun now) and Parakan Muncang Regency to Andawadak (Tanjung Sari Now). This is based on article "Sadjarah Soemedang Djaman Koempeni Toeg Nepi Ka Kiwari" by Raden Asik Natanegara. Earlier Bandung was forest thats constract to become small village. see history

Walk in Bandung

The main part of Bandung lies to the south of the railway line that crosses the city from east to west. Most of the banks, airlines, tourist offices and 5 star hotels are located here, along with the alun alun, as the main square in Indonesian cities is called. The principal thoroughfare, Jalan Asia Afrika, is in this part of town, as is Jalan Braga, which was the up-market shopping area in colonial times and is now the centre of Bandung’s nightlife. Most of the city’s budget accommodation and any many of its huge shopping malls are also in this area.

On the other side of the railway are the elegant residential areas of the Old Dutch suburbs with their wide tree lined streets, gardens and parks. The urban area stretches north along two parallel arterial roads, Jalan Setiabudi and Jalan Juanda, to the hills of Dago. The offices of the West Java provincial government, the Bandung Institute of Technology and the zoo are located in this area.

Although Bandung is only about 200 years old it has many places of historic and cultural interest, not least its museums and art deco architecture.

Paris Van Java

Paris Van Java is another mall. Located on JL SUKAJADI – when you exit from PASTEUR exit toll gate, on the second cross just turn right, its 1 km from there. . Previously it was shaded street with big trees where resident area (old but fine Dutch style) for many rich people – some trees are still there but the area are start to change its function as business area, mostly restaurants & factory outlets . Even though they are SOGO (first in BDG), Carrefour, and some boutiques with high brand, they focusing more on creating cozy hang out atmosphere. So many many cafés and restaurants are opened, big & modern cinema called BLITZMEGAPLEX (I think they are nine theaters) with WIFI are there. It’s like CILANDAK Town Square – two times larger. Instead of closed fully air conditioned, they build semi open air complex – low cost operation I guest :P.
Last time I was there, there is open stage from ARDAN Radio on the upper ground parking area, which is still very visible from many cafés in the surrounding. Seems obvious that they targeting young people and young families – middle up of course.
It still not fully operation, many places are still under construction (now a days, construction and business are synergizing very well – time is money) but traffic on JL SUKAJADI was jammed heavily already. Obviously they targeting on young people and middle up young family. Lousy picture from my creepy phone's camera.

Bandung, the best experiences

Welcome To Bandung

Bandung, City of Flowers, is the provincial capital of West Java and Indonesia' s third largest city. Known in colonial times as the Paris of Java because of its European ambiance and sophistication, Bandung shares with Miami a fine legacy of Tropical Deco architecture dating from the 1920's.
Situated on a plateau in the beautiful Parahayangan mountains, Bandung's pleasant climate and lush surroundings have offered an escape from the heat of the lowlands since the mid 19th century when it was the heart of the region's most prosperous plantation area. Host to the historic Asia Africa conference in 1955, Bandung is now a center of higher education, commerce and aircraft industry which despite its modern amenities still retains much of its colonial era charm.
Bandung is also renowned for its shopping, particularly for shoes, textiles, clothing and denims which are found in the colourful Jeans street. Easily reached from Jakarta by train, road or air (the scenic train trip is recommended), Bandung, with its cool mountain air is a popular second stop for those visiting the national capital and an essential stay-over for travellers enroute through Java.
The people of Bandung, sundanesse, possess an uncommon warmth along courtesy, friendliness and politeness. They have a strong sense of helping each other when in need. Moreover, the women of the Bandung region are known for their beauty. All of that makes you feel at home when you are in Bandung.

Beside those, Bandung still have many interesting place to see...

Bandung is a nice city, located about 180 km South of Jakarta. There is no international airport in Bandung. You have to go to Jakarta, then travel to Bandung. Now, the question is how to get to Bandung from Jakarta? There are many ways.
  • Taxi from the airport. You can ride taxi from the airport to Bandung. Current estimate of the cost is around Rp 250.000,- (with US$1 = Rp 10.000,- so that's around US$25). Be sure to get a good taxi. Blue Bird is a reliable name in taxi. Don't use other taxi name if you can.
  • Trains. (This is the means that I usually take.) Trains run frequently from Jakarta to Bandung and vice versa. Have a look at its schedule. Jakarta-Bandung route is very popular. If you don't get ticket, you'll going to wait a long time in a line. (More than 1 hours!) Fridays and Weekends it's almost impossible to get a ticket if you don't book ahead of time. The cost of the ticket is Rp 20.000,- to Rp 40.000,- (depending on the class). To get to the train station from the airport, you have two options:
    • Taxi. It's around Rp 50.000,- (or Rp 80.000,- if you get a private taxi from inside the airport. It's safe.). Outside the airport you have to haggle. Again, look for Blue Bird taxi. (This is what I take.)
    • Bus. There is a shuttle bus from the airport to train station. Look for "Gambir". It costs Rp 5.000,-/person. The bus is relatively safe and ok. You'll just have to wait a little longer (since it has a schedule). If you have plenty of time to catch the train, then bus is an ok choice. Watch your bellongings while you're on the bus. There has not been any problem with this bus. But, it's better to be concious.
  • Shuttle. There are informal shuttles (they call it "travel") at the Gambir train station. They usually wait outside the train station and wait for people who could not get tickets. The cost is around Rp 20.000,- to Rp 30.000,-/person. This is also ok, if you can stand the way they drive. Even I fell scared with the way they drive. I don't recommend this for the faint of heart.
  • Now ... there is an airline ("Deraya") that provides services from Jakarta to Bandung (and back to Jakarta) daily. It's Rp. 285,000 for one way trip. It takes 30 minutes from Jakarta to Bandung.

Bandung, also Bandoeng, one of the largest cities in Indonesia and the capital of West Java Province.Bandung is situated in the uplands of western Java at an elevation of 715 m (2,350 ft) in a scenic region dominated by high volcanoes. The city is a major industrial center, producing textiles, dyes, chemicals, aircraft, machinery, and quinine. It is also an important center for education and research, with facilities such as the Bandung Institute of Technology (1920), Pajajaran State University (1957), Parahyangan Catholic University (1955), the Pasteur Institute, and the National Research Institute. Bandung is the cultural capital of the Sundanese people and is noted for its Angklung bamboo orchestra and its tradition of classical Sundanese theater, dance, and gamelan music.

Bandung ’s cool upland climate was a major factor in the establishment of the city by the Dutch in 1810. Originally a garrison town, Bandung grew rapidly in importance after a railway line reached the city in 1884. The city served for a time as headquarters of the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. Several fine examples of Dutch colonial architecture survive in Bandung today.

The city attracted worldwide attention in April 1955 when it hosted the Bandung Conference, which was attended by representatives of 29 Asian and African countries. Attendees resolved to strengthen cultural and economic ties between member nations and to unite in opposition to colonialism.
